Art Education
At Stepping Stones, a child’s day is filled with art activities – in classrooms, outdoors, and especially in our big and sunny art studio. This 1000 sq. ft space is used daily for ceramics, sculpture, painting, printmaking and more. Our studio offers a vast range of supplies for creative exploration: clay, paint, fabric, yarn as well as materials found in nature, such as driftwood or seashells. We also emphasize the use of recycled plastic and cardboard.
“The wider the range of possibilities we offer children, the more intense will be their motivations and the richer their experiences.”
– Loris Malaguzzi
Our Art Studio
The studio is at the heart of our community because we believe that art plays a central role in a child’s education. Young children learn about the world through working with their hands – through experimentation with colors and textures. Art making is an investigative process, which greatly stimulates learning, as it nurtures creativity and the spirit of discovery. Through art, students develop many important skills, such as the ability to focus on a task, as well as an ability to form correlations (analogies, interpretations). Art is also essential in the process of learning how to work together as a team – how to listen to each other, take turns and maintain a creative dialogue.
